This work arose from a thought one day, when considering the impact of penal treadmills and their use in the punishment of homosexual men, in the nineteenth century.
The concept then developed into a juxtaposition comparing the penal treadmill to some aspects of modern yet harmful health culture, particularly in the gay male community, where bodily aesthetic is privileged.
I am attempting to draw a conceptual comparison between the two.
I created images using a text-to-image AI, the tool generated the visual of ‘Victorian treadmill’ quite theoretically compared to how it would have looked to its contemporaries, this was particularly interesting to me.
An endless exertion is shown through artificial people, ceaselessly running and exercising, whilst the AI at times misunderstands the context of the initial images I have processed with an image-to-video AI.
The underlying impetus of the work represents an eternal and cyclical struggle.
