Despite the Oscar and other acclaim for Japanese filmmaker Ryusuke Hamaguchi DRIVE MY CAR, Japan is in a difficult position with a drastically reduced industrial population in contrast to the remarkable success of filmmakers from Korea and other Asian countries. In 2021, as the turmoil of COVID continues, young filmmaker Mutsuki Kameyama began documenting the situation by taking on film festivals around the world with their science fiction film 12 MONTHS OF KAI. The film is a collection of their submissions, Q&As at film festivals, interactions with local filmmakers, and monologues at hotels.... The footage clearly depicts Kameyama's struggles and the obstacles they faced as a Japanese filmmaker, such as their English ability and the peculiarities of the Japanese film industry. Interspersed throughout the film are Kameyama's interviews with people in the film industry. In between the interviews, they talk about the real struggles of young directors and actors, as well as the experiences of Japanese actors and directors such as Shinobu Terajima and Ryuhei Kitamura, who are active on the international stage, in their own words. What problems does Japanese films face today, and what will happen to it in the future?
