Imagine Science Films (ISF) turns 15th years old and for this momentous occasion, we're celebrating our home-bred movement: the Science New Wave.
Scientific storytelling is increasingly and fearlessly experimenting in form and style. Scientific stories are becoming more personal and hybrid, tackling issues pertaining both to the individual and the world at-large. How are artists, scientists and educators working together to create singular narratives? The boundaries between scientific data and cinema magic are dissolving. Similar to developing organisms, science films are emerging with new traits and new forms. The Science New Wave (SNW) is born. The SNW Central Dogma is built on six fundamental traits yet it keeps evolving.
How do I attend the 15th Annual Imagine Science Film Festival?
The 15th Annual Imagine Science Film Festival will be simultaneously happening in New York and virtually. We're providing this hybrid experience as the world is still in flux, and we want to make sure our science cinema programs reach our audiences of artists and scientists within the confines of the New York City jungle and beyond.
Our Features (Science New Wave + Spotlights) and Short Programs will have same air/premiere times both in theaters and on this very same platform.
Our festival partner LABOCINE is also presenting a section entitled LABOCINE CLOSE-UPS that will only be streaming during the festival.
If you're in town, we recommend the in vivo experience in a NY theater (I know it's been a while!). Make sure to catch our programs at the Museum of the Moving Image, Cinema Village and other venues if you are in New York! We will have feature premieres, panels, workshops, and many more surprises for our 15th edition. Head over to our Festival page for more info.
How does the FESTIVAL PASS work?
The FESTIVAL PASS gives you access to our entire festival - both online and in person. We do not provide tickets for single programs. $30 for 30 features and over 60 shorts.
Ticketing starts on September 23 (3 weeks before kick-off). We will release a limited amount of FESTIVAL PASSES then and we then put on hold a few closer to the festival.
If you get the pass, we will provide you with the following perks:
- Access to virtual + in-person festival programs indicated with a green star. Check out what's available with the pass here.
- One-year subscription to Labocine to be claimed using the coupon you will receive by email.
- Science New Wave member status. Original copy of the manifesto and more perks here.
What is the difference between RSVP and the Festival Pass? Why RSVP?
By RSVPing, you will receive reminders a few hours before the program start time. You can also determine which programs are more popular than others and make sure to be first on "virtual" line. Programs become available at the specified start time and remain available until the end of the festival.
RSVPs are specific to each film program (feature / shorts) but they do not guarantee entrance. You wil need to get the FESTIVAL PASS and remember we may run out of those so get them earlier than later.
How to watch festival films?
Click on a program below and you will see several thumbnails that correspond to the various sub-parts of the program. Click on Film, Panel, Webinair and watch at scheduled times
Will I be able to watch the films anytime during the festival?
Film become available on their start time and for the remaining of the festival until 11:59 EST. We recommend you catch them LIVE as they there is a counter on each film.
Most programs are limited to certain number of views so we may have a few films that will be SOLD OUT and no longer accessible. We will indicate the films that go SOLD OUT in our programs.
Can I watch the films from anywhere?
You need to be in the United States to be able to watch films of the festival Filmmaker Q&A conversations will be published on our social media.
Most films are restricted to the US because we're ultimately a New York festival and need to keep it this way for many reasons related to the concerns from filmmakers, producers, and distributors. However, some creators have expressed an interest to share their films with the world at-large.
For those not in the United States, we are making a select group of films available worldwide in a few playlists from October 15-21. The viewers not on US land, can still enjoy the following:
- September Issue: Cinemicro - Films and Scenes showcasing the microscopic world.
- Symbiosis films made over the last few years by pairs of scientists and filmmakers short films created over the course of 1-week during the festival.
- Scenes: Capturing Scientific Data on Screen.
For our worldwide audience, many of the festival films will gradually be programmed on Labocine Issues and via partnering PRO organizations over the coming months. A few may trickle into LIVE events so stay tuned so sign up to catch all of these.
Once programmed at Imagine Science, it is important for us to help these films get out to the world in order to keep with our mission of promoting compelling scientific stories. All of the panels and conversations will also be shared on our Vimeo channel and Facebook Live.
