LiMONi is a hybrid documentary-fiction film that takes place in the not-so-distant future, and tells a futuristic story with real people, existent places and current day events. In 2038, everything in Brussels looks the same, but a few things are gradually more noticeable different. Temperatures and rental prices have risen and drinking water has become an even more valuable commodity. Matte is a non-binary person (they/them), can’t afford a permanent place of residence, and has increasingly vivid dreams about a lemon grove.

Matte wanders through Brussels, looking for water for themselves and their plants, meeting new and old friends and foes and distributing lemon plants and seeds. Their roaming existence is challenging and precarious, and after an abusive encounter, they arrive at Zennegarden, a small green oasis in the Belgian capital. Here, Matte meets Kieran, a turned industrial pollinator, who now lives in unison with his own garden. Rather than using unsustainable techniques, Kieran helps the garden grow through vibrations and care, and with much playfulness. Kieran also cares for both Matte's plants and Matte themselves, and an affection grows between the two beings. While Matte relaxes and becomes increasingly anchored in this oasis, Kieran also starts dreaming of a lemon grove. Matte’s roots grow deeper and deeper in Zennegarden and ultimately only a lemon plant remains of them.

In LiMONi we see how we live among the mess of capitalism and how this system can make us ill. But also, how we can make meaningful connections and fabulate a common future. At the end, we find ourselves amongst a community occupying a flooded area; the Wiels Swamp. From the point of view of the swamp itself, we look at the different human and non-human creatures that form an alliance to preserve the swamp, and listen to them discuss the possible different futures and dreams they have for this common place. Here, the interlacing of the social and ecological struggle becomes evident. Some of the occupiers also start dreaming of a lemon grove, and different lemon plants start showing up at the swamp, looking for a safe and fruitful place to grow.
