An abandoned mining operation in the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula became a gigantic open wound in the landscape. A dead scene of rocks and cavities. But Nature began to take over that space. Station by station, life has taken over La Jayona until it has become what it is today: a unique enclave far removed from its surroundings that has been declared a Natural Monument. Its microclimate allows the development of unique vegetation and is a refuge for a multitude of animal species from amphibians to the almighty eagle owl.
