In this film, Under the Microscope’s “Creatives for Science” team delves into an edutainment explainer on bacterial immune systems that have been recently harnessed to work as genetic engineering tools. We briefly discuss a research article from the biology journal Cell which recently reported the discovery of even more such systems from a startlingly unexpected source! In collaboration with several scientists, graphic designers, animators, and sound engineers, we have implemented simplified graphics and animations to help us effectively communicate complex molecular biology concepts to a broad, non-scientist viewer on the African continent and beyond. Our broad aim is to ensure that our audience leaves with a newfound wonder and curiosity about the microbial world.
