Ever since a little parasite entered the stages of beekeeping in Europe in the 1980s, science, honeybees and their keepers find themselves in an ongoing crisis. Slowly and gradually the film unfolds the spectrum of some strange parallel worlds – dystopian and utopian, poetic and cruel, desperate and hopeful. The practices of breeding, medical care, and tree beekeeping are closely depicted. Like one of its protagonists, the film poses the overall question: ‚What is natural anyway?‘ Its rhythm gives viewers time to experience, unravel, and involve themselves, in the immersive sounds, images and ongoing debates in the fight for honeybee survival. But scientists worry that this approach of fighting and control is a dead end, and they wonder how the revival of tree beekeeping from the forests of Bashkiria may become a sustainable approach.
