New title, as of July 2024: THE TREES ARE HISSING
In May/June 2024, American periodical cicadas — seven subspecies of Brood XIII and Brood XIX —hatched simultaneously in Illinois. For the first time in 221 years, seven different species (each with a unique song) sang, chorused, flew, and mated altogether in less than four weeks. This bicentennial event was an occasion to look back into the history of colonisation, its connection to the land and people in the present, while also reflecting on our interconnections with that which is other than human. Hence; how do we listen to cicadas, but also how do they listen to us?
Part travelogue and part experiential, The Trees Are Hissing borrows from the aesthetics of transcendental cinema as it connects in a durational present, various deep listeners (scientists, entomologists, musicians, historians, artists, activists, and others) to the periodical cicada songs. In the quest for this unique bicentennial and ancient hissing sound, one may ask: what is an image of the future?
