Yiling, a Chinese marine biologist working in the US, sets out on a journey to save a humpback whale that has been reported for repeatedly being stranded and pushed back into the ocean by locals. Haunted by her childhood memories by the sea in China, especially the sudden loss of her father to fishing one day, Yiling commits herself to finding the whale. However, as Yiling spends time with the villagers, her suppressed childhood memories and the longing for her homeland begin to resurface, leading her through unexpected transformations.
