Once brimming with ambitious social-utopian promise, Viennese housing complex Alterlaa now at best evokes nostalgia for a futurism of the past. A disillusioned elderly inhabitant seeks to end her life, only to find even the most drastic of escapes rendered impossible by rigid design. It is precisely this cruel irony that plunges her into a true community – one that introduces her to an unorthodox antidote.
