College freshman, Cortney Lavorgna chose to spend her college practicum studying genetics in the Greg Cox laboratory at The Jackson Laboratory. This assignment was more than just school work, for Cortney it was personal. Cortney has a mild form of the rare disease spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and she was determined to learn more about her disease and what researchers are doing to help combat this debilitating disease.
