Energy Lithuania is a documentary-style study of an electrical power plant. At the same time, it evokes the life of “Electric Town” (Elektrėnai) built around the plant in the 1950s and 60s. This artificial “new” city was designed as an embodiment of optimism and Modernist ethos, symbolizing Lithuania’s technological revolution. Deimantas Narkevičius uses 21st century footage: urban landscapes, recreation areas, elements of the power plant and its interior, and interviews with the employees of the power plant. The artist uses “Super 8” film which enhances the feeling of nostalgia and creates distance from the view thus imitating the technologies used in Lithuanian television documentaries of the Soviet era. The result is a pictorial, visual and subjective glance at the utopian past and the gradually dissolving present of the town.
