The large-scale mosquito control of the Mediterranean coast began in the 1960s. It was the sine qua non condition for the tourism and industrial development of the coastline. The Camargue, already recognized for its natural heritage and designated a "green break," was spared from insecticides. However, in 2006, the first mosquito control trials took place within the very boundaries of the Regional Natural Park.
