Before a child learns anything about mushrooms, he can already recognize the most iconic of them. The red toadstool is a symbol found in many cultures, and its allure has inspired artists since time immemorial. In addition to the well-known psychoactive substance psilocybin found in mushrooms, the alkaloid muscimol also causes hallucinogenic states in the red toadstool. Its effect on the organism is dampening and sedative, and the original shamans using this mushroom, usually in Slavic countries, liken it to fairy-tale mystical trips. Program guide Hamilton Morris follows the journey of research into its derivatives in medical laboratories and homeopathy, to symbolically end it in the Ukrainian Carpathians and experience the power of toadstool with his own senses.
