“In the midst of the action but outside of the history”. A seminal work of British video art – originally screened at IFFR in 1998 – Go West Young Man (1996) uses a Black father and son’s rhythmical narration to unpack issues relating to race, prejudice and masculinity. Developed with computer animation using a Commodore ‘Amiga’, Keith Piper’s short innovatively assembles photography, illustration, and archival footage to form a powerful, poetic montage of historical and daily racism.
