A masseuse returning to the dating scene falls for a man who turns out to be the ex-husband of one of her clients in Nicole Holofcener’s charming, perceptive rom-com – one of the century’s finest. The initial meet-cute and intermittent splashes of zaniness give way to a gentle, bittersweet meditation on middle-age anxieties, loneliness, and the lingering emotional void parenthood can only cover temporarily. Holofcener’s first collaboration with Seinfeld and Veep star Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who received a Golden Globe nomination for her role, this is the director’s biggest commercial hit to date, notably featuring the penultimate performance of The Sopranos icon James Gandolfini in the warmest, most affable turn of his storied career.
