At Harvard, Cecilia Payne (1900-1979) discovered that the Sun and stars were made of hydrogen. Her professor, Henry Norris Russell, took all the glory when he later made this conclusion. Having become the first woman to head the astronomy department at Harvard, she fell victim to the Matilda effect, the minimization of women's work in science.
