On the edge of the Sahel, firewood is becoming rare and expensive. The desert advances steadily each year. To counter this deforestation and the poverty it causes, a network of NGOs, metalworkers, and women's associations has been developing an effective alternative to firewood for the past ten years: parabolic solar cookers.
