Carved on ancient Babylonian tablets, archaeologists found the oldest written story, dating back to c 2000 BC. narrating the Epic of Gilgamesh, a king who sets out on a quest to cheat death and live forever. On the 11th tablet, he finds a bottom-dwelling marine plant covered with spikes, with the ability to restore one's youth, but failed to fulfill his desire as a snake bore the plant off and sloughed its skin as it turned away.
In 2024, over three centuries later, the discoveries on minerals from the ocean floor triggered the interest of a group of 10 biologists and deep-diving enthusiasts from the coast of Ecuador, who set out on their own impulsive exploration for the mythical plant. They believed it to be somewhere at the bottom of the Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean given its complex biogeography and ecological integrity, which makes it one of the most productive oceans in the world. However, it is a time-sensitive task as temperatures are rapidly increasing, altering the ocean’s chemistry and forcing abnormal change on marine ecosystems. After a decade of searching, the explorers found only particles of the plant in the excrement of synthetic cucumbers-like creatures who got to it first.
Long after mankind became extinct from not being able to cope with the extreme environmental conditions, these evolved glass-like sea creatures adapted to prevail, filtering carbonic acid.
While traversing through the abyss, reality becomes unclear intertwining past, present and future in this dystopian science fiction documentary. It intends to explore humans' obsession with achieving immortality and the opposing forces of climate change and ocean acidification, two of the biggest rising threats the globe is currently facing.
